At Atlante, quality is more than just a requirement—it’s our mission. Our Quality team works tirelessly to ensure that every product we offer is authentic, safe, and meets the highest standards, with a strong focus on preventing food fraud.

With a team of 11 specialists, we apply rigorous controls throughout the supply chain, adhering to voluntary BRC and IFS standards and implementing strict protocols for supplier selection and verification.

Among the products that require the most careful oversight, Feta DOP stands out. This iconic cheese is not only a symbol of tradition but also particularly vulnerable to fraud and irregularities.

Why Does Feta DOP Require Extra Controls?

Feta DOP is produced across a vast geographical area, from mainland Greece to the islands, making quality control more complex. Additionally, while DOP regulations govern production, they do not exclude the presence of cow’s milk in manufacturing facilities, increasing the risk of contamination and fraud.

Several other critical factors heighten this risk:

• A significant price gap between cow’s milk and sheep/goat’s milk, which can encourage dishonest practices
• The common practice in some markets of producing “Feta-style” cheese using cow’s milk, often sold for export or food service
• The rising global demand for Feta, which intensifies price competition and increases the risk of non-compliant products

A Rigorous Control System

To ensure authenticity and consistent quality, Atlante has developed a structured and highly selective approach, based on:

• Advanced product testing, including organoleptic, analytical, isotopic, and species-specific analysis to verify milk origin
• Direct collaboration with the Greek certification authorities body Elgo Dimitra, ensuring continuous compliance checks
• Ongoing monitoring of the sheep and goat milk market to anticipate changes in the production landscape

This process allows us to work only with highly reliable producers who guarantee both authenticity and unwavering quality—an essential factor for such a complex DOP product.
